WEEKEND MUSINGS: Sneaking Joy into Everyday Tasks

My husband works out-of-state and lives in an apartment he shares with a roommate during the week. In order to minimize the expenses of eating out or buying convenience foods (he's not much for cooking), as well as provide nutritious meals, I cook extra-large portions during the weekend and send along the leftovers. I was very disappointed when I learned that last week my husband pulled nine meals out of the freezer to defrost simply because the containers were so frozen solid, he couldn't tell what was in them. (I guess he didn't want to play "meal roulette," even though I only make him meals he likes.) He ended up wasting half the food.

The obvious solution is to label all the containers in the future. So, this weekend, I got ambitions and cooked several casserole-type meals; I sent him out the door with twenty-two entrees. I didn't want my writing to come off the label in the freezer, so I printed the labels on the computer:

Ultimately, any food label is better than no label; my husband didn't need anything special -- just to know what was in each container. However, by taking five minutes to create a custom label just for him, I accomplished some very important things:

  • By making a (very) personal label, my husband will remember I care about him every time he takes a meal out of the freezer. I like him to have happy thoughts of me, especially when he is away from home.

  • By doing something small but personal, you are encouraging intimacy in your relationship. Little things add up!

  • It's a fun, funny, and playful thing to do. I giggled when I made the label, and my husband laughed as he packed his food. Happiness and playfulness in a marriage is a good thing...and playfulness shouldn't be reserved for special occasions.

  • My older daughters were shocked and embarrassed when they saw the labels; as a teen and pre-teen, they are at the ages where kissing is met with a loud "Eeeww!" But what they see are two people in love -- two adults in a healthy, loving relationship. That's what I want my children to know they have...parents in love.

  • I now have a colorful template that I can use and modify again and again.

  • A little label is another way to add beauty in small places.

The next time you have a chore to do, think if there is something quick, fun, and unexpected you can do to brighten your life and/or the life of another. It can make something mundane a little more enjoyable...and fun beats drudgery every day!
